Haier Dehumidifier Reviews

50-pint: Haier QDHR50LZ and Haier QPHR50LZ

Haier QDHR50LZ Dehumidifier

Haier’s best-selling dehumidifier today is the standard 50-pint unit. QDHR50LZ is Energy Star certified like all Haier dehumidifiers and features all the standard electronic controls and functions. This includes an adjustable humidistat, 24-hour timer, multiple fan speeds, and pre-set modes. The standard auto shut-off, auto restart, and auto defrost functions are also present.

At 23.5 inches tall and 14.4 inches wide, it is slimmer than the average 50-pint dehumidifier. The sleek and modern design comes with built-in pocket handles and casters for easy movement. This high-capacity dehumidifier is great for a humid basement, garage, grow room, or a large living room.

The 50-pint Haier dehumidifier comes with an average-sized 15-pint water collection bucket. In large, wet spaces, you may have to empty the tank up to four times a day. If you don’t want to manually drain water, you can attach a hose (not included) to enable continuous draining. The only difference from QPHR50LZ is it comes with a built-in pump for automatic drainage. You may also find the older 50-pint HEH50ET, but take note that Haier no longer manufactures new units with this model name.

Several users report that the Haier dehumidifier can be very loud when operating. Since this is a larger capacity dehumidifier, you’ll likely only use it in a basement or away from living or sleeping spaces so the noise will be almost unnoticeable. So, if you need an efficient dehumidifier for large spaces, then the Haier 50-pint is a good choice.

PROS
• Energy Star certified
• High moisture removal rate
• Easy-to-use controls
• Continuous draining option
CONS
• Can be very loud
• Has to purchase drain hose separately

Haier QDHR35LZ

Haier QDHR35LZ Dehumidifier

For smaller and less humid rooms, Haier offers this 35-pint dehumidifier. All features and functionality are similar to the 50-pint, save for the moisture removal capacity. It’s also Energy Star certified to ensure greater savings on your monthly bills.

This 35-pint dehumidifier has the same 15-pint capacity water tank as the larger units, but it’s actually smaller in dimensions at only 19 inches high and 13 inches wide. The bucket capacity is around average for a 35-pint, since most 30-pint or 35-pint units from other brands have the same physical size as the respective 50-pint unit. If you don’t want to use the bucket, you also have the option for continuous drainage. However, it doesn’t come with a built-in pump.

While there is no information on the exact coverage area of Haier dehumidifiers, 30- to 35-pint units from other brands are typically recommended for spaces between 1,500 to 3,000 square feet. This can be a small to medium basement, garage, living room, or kitchen. Although small enough, you may not want to use it in your bedroom since it’s not very quiet.

Haier QDHR20LZ

Haier QDHR20LZ Dehumidifier

For even smaller or less damp rooms, you have Haier’s smallest dehumidifier, the 20-pint QDHR20LZ. It’s likely the newer version of this older HEN30ET 30-pint unit. It has the same features and design as the higher capacity units and is also Energy Star rated.

This 20-pint is similar in physical size to the 35-pint, but it comes with a small water bucket of 8.5-pint capacity. This is to be expected in a 20-pint dehumidifier. Since it has the same design, you can also attach a standard garden hose to this unit if you want the water it collects to go straight to the drain. The capacity is ideal for smaller rooms, although the unit may be too loud for spaces other than a basement or garage.

Haier Dehumidifier Features

Haier Dehumidifier Digital Control

Haier features digital controls with touch buttons, LED display, and indicator lights that allow you to monitor operation and adjust the settings as needed.

Digital Controls

Digital Humidistat

The digital display on the center shows the current humidity and the preferred humidity while setting. Press the arrow buttons to select the desired humidity level from 35% to 80% in 5% increments. Once programmed, the unit will cycle on and off to maintain the humidity level chosen. When the ideal humidity is reached, the compressor will stop running, and when the room humidity rises, the unit will start dehumidifying again.

To set the unit for continuous operation, press the down arrow until the Nonstop light illuminates. In Nonstop mode, the dehumidifier continuously operates at its maximum settings (theoretically down to 0% RH) for 24 hours or until the water bucket is full.

Fan Speed

Haier dehumidifiers feature three fan speeds. Press the Speed button to choose from High, Medium, and Low. There are indicator lights to distinguish the three. For maximum moisture removal, choose High speed. If you want a quiet operation, choose Low speed. Additionally, the Smart Dry feature compares the set humidity level with the room humidity and automatically adjusts the fan speed accordingly.

Delay Timer

Like a lot of other similar dehumidifiers, you can set your Haier unit to automatically turn on or turn off after one to 24 hours. To program the unit to automatically turn on, press the Delay button when the unit is off. Select the number of hours using the arrow buttons and the On indicator will light up. To program the unit to automatically turn off, press the button when the unit is on. The Off indicator will light up when you finish setting the timer.

Filter

Haier also comes with a washable air filter to catch dust and other impurities as the air enters the unit. After 250 hours of use, the Filter light will illuminate to remind you to check the filter. The filter is attached to the grille intake on the back of the unit. Wash the filter with warm, soapy water, then rinse and let it dry completely before reinstalling. Press the Filter button for three seconds to reset the filter indicator and the light will turn off.

Water Bucket

Haier Dehumidifier Water Bucket

Just like any household dehumidifier, Haier collects moisture in a water bucket. When the bucket is full, the compressor and fan will stop running and the bucket full indicator light will illuminate.  Once the bucket is completely filled with water, you will need to empty it before the unit can start running again. If the bucket is full or missing, an alarm will sound for about 10 seconds to remind you to empty and replace the bucket.

Remove the bucket by sliding it out from the bottom of the dehumidifier. Hold it with both hands and pour the collected water into the sink or drain. Empty the bucket as soon as you can and wash it at least every two weeks to prevent mold growth inside the machine.

Drain Hose

Haier Dehumidifier Drain Hose

Obviously, not everyone has the time to empty the water bucket by hand. If your unit is in the basement, garage, or any part of your house you rarely visit, it can be easy to forget. While the auto shutoff feature will prevent water overflow, it also means your dehumidifier will not be doing its job. In the meantime, moisture levels will increase again.

If you can’t empty the water manually, you can use the continuous draining function. You’ll need a standard garden hose (not included) to attach to the drain outlet on the side of the unit. Secure the hose connection and direct the other end of the hose to a low-level drain without any kinks or knots. Don’t forget to detach the hose if you want to use the bucket instead.

Built-in Pump

If a floor drain isn’t available in the room you want to dehumidify, a drain pump is the easiest solution. It pushes the collected moisture out of the unit even in a vertical direction. You can have the hose run up a sink or into a window to divert the water outside. Most high-capacity dehumidifiers (40-pint or 50-pint and above) also come with a built-in condensate pump, like the 50-pint Haier QPHR50LZ

The pump allows automatic draining vertically up to 15 feet. This is a very convenient feature for basements or other large spaces without a floor drain. If your dehumidifier doesn’t come with this functionality, you can purchase a separate external condensate pump. It works the same way and is generally more durable.

How to Choose a Dehumidifier

Dehumidifier Capacity and Room Size

The main purpose of a dehumidifier is to remove excess moisture in the air. Standard home dehumidifiers have a moisture removal rate that ranges from 20 to 70 pints per day. These pint ratings are determined through tests set by the Department of Energy. As of early 2020, dehumidifiers are tested at 65°F and 60% relative humidity. In accordance with these new standards, Haier now only offers 20-pint, 35-pint, and 50-pint dehumidifiers. Each unit has a recommended area of coverage, although Haier does not give exact figures on this. It’s important to consider the size and dampness of the room to choose the best Haier dehumidifier for you.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency determines the unit’s ability to get the job done using less power. To ensure the energy efficiency of your unit, look for a unit with the Energy Star label. This means that it meets the EPA’s energy efficiency requirements for dehumidifiers. All Haier dehumidifiers are Energy Star certified, so they can help cut down on your power consumption and save money in the long run. You can find the energy efficiency information in the manual, on the unit itself, or on the Energy Star website.

How Does Haier Compare to the Competition?

Haier is a multinational brand headquartered in Qingdao, China. It was founded in 1984 initially as a refrigerator manufacturer. As the company expanded, they now provide home electronics and kitchen appliances, including microwaves, dishwashers, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners.

Build Quality and Warranty

In terms of the quality of construction, Haier dehumidifiers are just around average compared to highly-rated dehumidifiers like the Frigidaire, hOmeLabs, or Honeywell. Since the company’s acquisition of the American appliance brand GE Appliances, both Haier and GE dehumidifiers have featured a similar design and construction. They have almost the same control panel, as well as a top exhaust and hose outlet on the side.

Additionally, Haier (like GE) comes with an industry-standard one-year warranty. Most dehumidifiers, including the higher-end Frigidaire, have a one-year warranty. Only hOmeLabs has two years, while Honeywell comes with a longer five-year warranty.

Dehumidification Performance

Just like most other brands, Haier offers 20-pint, 35-pint, and 50-pint dehumidifiers, all of which are Energy Star certified. Similar to a standard dehumidifier, they can operate in low temperatures down to 41℉ with an Automatic Defrost control to prevent frost buildup inside the machine. Although, unlike most other dehumidifiers, Haier does not have an auto defrost light that will indicate when the unit is currently defrosting.

Noise Output

Noise can be subjective, but compressor dehumidifiers are naturally loud when operating. Although, some models have a better way of masking this buzzing noise with the more pleasant and quiet fan noise. On units with a top exhaust, the fan noise is distributed more evenly, making an overall more pleasing noise than in side-exhaust units. Also similar to GE models, Haier is on the louder side especially considering it has a top exhaust. The manufacturer claims minimum noise levels of 50 decibels, but a lot of users report that it’s much louder.

Consumer Feedback

Out of hundreds of user reviews that we found across multiple sites, we can say that Haier dehumidifiers are effective in removing moisture, reducing humidity levels from 70-80% down to 40% in a matter of hours. Although, keep in mind that customers usually purchase only one dehumidifier at a time, so they cannot make any comparison.

As mentioned, most of the complaints about Haier dehumidifiers are the noise levels. While this noise becomes nearly negligible when the dehumidifier is in the basement or anywhere far away from the living space, it can be a deal-breaker for a lot of people.

The built-in condensate pump is of similar quality and durability as those built into dehumidifiers from other brands. If you rely on the drain pump for continuous drainage, it may be a better idea to find install an external condensate pump, as well as a cheaper, higher-rated dehumidifier like the hOmeLabs HME020031N or the Vremi VRM010184N

Conclusion

Overall, Haier dehumidifiers perform well enough in average room conditions. We cannot yet find exact information on the square feet coverage of each model, although we can guess it has similar performance to corresponding GE units. While it is a good energy-efficient choice for most, the noise levels can be a big drawback. For tougher jobs, you may want to consider other high-capacity dehumidifiers like the ones we mentioned above.
