There are endless water filters available on the market and most of them claim to remove almost 100% of the impurities in the water at little costs and with no effort from you. Watts Premier 531130 UF-3 is one of those units that not only promises to provide performance but also manages to fulfill its promise. This is an under sink filter designed by the famous manufacturer Watts that is renowned for the high-quality products. Although it’s not the most advanced nor the most effective water filter and it might seem a little hard to install, it’s great for single-faucet use and it will surely improve the water you use on a daily basis. Plus, it’s more affordable than similar models so you will manage to save a buck.
The biggest advantage of an under sink filter is the space it manages to save for not having to be installed on the counter, in sight. This one can perfectly fit under any sink as it measures 4” in depth, 10” in width and 16” in height. The entire housing of the cartridges weighs only 6 pounds and comes in a white finish that blends under the sink while the sleek brushed nickel faucet that comes with the package will surely match your kitchen décor. Having a faucet included doesn’t mean that you will have to remove your old faucet but it will only become useful again when you will stop using the filter.
No doubt about it, the most important aspect of a water filter system is how well it manages to deal with the impurities in the water. This particular model is very effective in removing a wide range of impurities, from sand and sediment to chlorine and the dangerous lead and cysts. The innovative Ultra filtration technology relies on three stages of water filtration that include 3 different types of media. Each media is designed to work against a certain category of water pollutants without reducing the water flow rate. The filter is designed to operate at temperatures ranging from 40 to 100F and at pressures from 40 to 100psi.
As for water hardness, be aware that it shouldn’t exceed 10 grains per gallon otherwise, the membranes will be affected and it will last shorter. If the water at home is too hard, consider adding a softener to the system in order to solve the problem and protect the lifespan of the filter. Speaking of lifespan, note that the first and the second filters need to be replaced every 6 months while the third can last up to 12 months without needing a replacement. We couldn’t find the exact capacity of the filter but given that the filters must only be replaced once or twice per year, we assume that the filter can handle at least 20,000 gallons of water per change.
|Dimensions||4” x 10” x 16”|
|Contaminants it helps remove||VOCs, chlorine, sediment, cysts, sand, and so on|
|Operating water temperature||40-100 degrees Fahrenheit|
|Pressure range||40-100 PSI|
|Filter lifespan||1 year|
The filtering process involves three stages namely three types of filters differentiated by color, as follows: a red one, a light blue one, and a purple one. The first one is a 5-micron sediment filter that captures larger particles like sand, dust, or rust in order to protect the following two cartridges. The second type is a 0.5-micron activated carbon media that reduces the number of chemicals in the water and fights against bad odors caused by chlorine and bacteria. It can also remove lead and volatile organic compounds like pesticides, herbicides, oils, solvents, and more. The last media is an ultrafiltration hollow membrane that adapts to the regular water pressure and pushes the water through it in order to capture particles as small as 0.2 microns that might escape the previous two filters. This guarantees that the water resulted will be clean, fresh, and safe for drinking and cooking.
Aside from the high-performance filters combined for superior results, there aren’t many other features to analyze in this product. It only comes with an automatic shut-off that turns it off when it has reached its filtration capacity and it can’t handle any more water. Unfortunately, you won’t enjoy the convenience of a filter change indicator to let you know when it’s time to replace the cartridges. The unit also lacks a UV sanitation feature that would kill germs and viruses. As said before, you can always attach a water softener to reduce the hardness and protect the filters.
Ease of Use
Compared to other house filters, this one is more complicated to install because the manual is not very clear and detailed. However, due to the unique swivel-valve, you will be able to save some time on installation while the push-button assembly makes filter changing a breeze without even having to turn off the water supply. Operating this water filter is also very easy due to the advanced ultrafiltration technology that enables it to run at very low pressures, making it ideal for residential use.
The convenience is increased by the lack of a separate holding tank for the water and the electricity-free operating. To protect your investment and ensure you will enjoy clean water for a long time, the manufacturer accompanies the product with a 3-year warranty on parts and labor. Make sure you install it properly and that you replace the filters in time and you will certainly experience no unpleasantness with it.
