What is a Water Distiller?

A water distiller is a type of water treatment that removes up to 99.99% of contaminants. It boils water into steam, then captures and condenses it, leaving contaminants behind. A water distiller typically consists of a boiling chamber, a heating element, cooling system and a separate storage tank.

The water distiller machine is usually made from plastic or metal and almost looks similar to a coffee pot. The bottom half of the body is where the heating and boiling take place, while the lid on top is where condensation occurs. You can unscrew the lid to access the boiling chamber and add water for distillation. Since countertop water distillers aren’t connected to a faucet, you’ll need to fill the chamber yourself. It can typically hold at least a gallon or four liters.

Water distillers normally have a small nozzle or spout protruding from the top where the distilled water drips directly down into the water holding tank. This tank is made from translucent plastic or glass, allowing you to see the water inside it. What is Distilled Water?

Distilled water is essentially water in its purest form, but it isn’t much different from other types of purified water. Some types may contain minerals, which is really the only factor that sets them apart from mineral and contaminant-free distilled water.

How Does the Distillation Process Work?

Distillation is one of the oldest, natural ways to filter water. In fact, it happens around us every day—the sun heats water, water evaporates, then it condenses in the clouds, causing rain. The same process applies on a smaller scale in water distillers, where the water boils, becomes vapor, then condenses to form distilled water.

Distillation separates the water from other substances considering different boiling points. This removes almost all contaminants including bacteria, chemicals, and organic compounds. The following is the step-by-step process of countertop water distillers.

1. Water is heated in the unit’s boiling chamber. There is a heating element under the chamber which heats the water to its boiling point, producing steam or water vapor. 

2. Steam travels into a condenser. When steam rises, it passes out of a vent inside the boiling chamber then into a condenser usually made of stainless steel. Left behind in the boiling chamber are all impurities in the water that are incapable of converting into gas particles.

3. Steam condenses into liquid. Inside the condenser, a fan cools down the steam and turns it into water droplets. Then, these droplets pass through a post filter.

4. The activated carbon filter removes leftover impurities. The role of the post-filter is to remove any contaminants that may have made it through the condenser along with the steam. Through adsorption, the filter traps contaminants and prevents them from passing through. As an option, some water distillers may have a remineralization filter to add a healthy amount of minerals like calcium and magnesium, which have been removed in the distillation process. 

5. Lastly, the water droplets collect in a holding tank. Once the water droplets have passed through the filter(s), they drip into the collection tank and are now ready for drinking.

Depending on your water distiller, you may need to wait from four to six hours to get one full gallon of distilled water. The process may seem too long, but household water distillers produce water literally droplet by droplet. It will take several hours to fill the water pot but once the process is complete, you get ready-to-drink distilled water.

You’ll find many uses for distilled water in your house. For one, it’s clean and safe for consumption, and it’s also useful in a lot of household needs. Here are some of the ways distilled water is commonly used at home.

Drinking

Clarifying Common Myths About Drinking Distilled Water

Distilled water will leach minerals from your body.

The truth is distilled water does absorb a number of minerals from your body since it’s completely mineral-free. However, this amount isn’t enough to cause any concern. Most of your mineral intake comes from food and not water, so even if you drink eight cups of hard water daily, the minerals you get from this water will only amount to about 15% of your required mineral intake.
