Some dehumidifiers are more appropriate for mold and mildew removal, others prevent bacteria from forming in the air, while others simply remove excess humidity from the atmosphere. The product we will be reviewing today, the Sunpentown SD-46T, falls into the category that is suitable for eliminating mold and mildew, or for discouraging them from installing in your home. At the same time, it is also one of the best rated on the market and is considered suitable for spaces like the basement or garage, because it can act efficiently in large, highly humid spaces.
This unit has plenty more qualities; however, that will not make it suitable for every situation, for every home. Pay close attention to the information below, as it should allow you to determine whether this is a product you may need in your home.
When you read reviews, the design may be the last thing on your mind. However, it too is very important. Although very suitable for basements and the like, the Sunpentown SD-46T has quite an appealing design. It is fitted with a quality plastic casing in white and silver colors, and a nice blue accent on the sides. It measures 16 inches in width, 8 inches in depth and 21.5 inches in height; it weighs a mere 27.5 pounds when empty, so it’s easy to pick up and transport. The blue light line on the side shows the dehumidifier in its initial state; as its moisture compartment starts to fill, the light will turn red to let you know when the container needs to be emptied. The dehumidifier is also fitted with a control panel on top, which allows you to control humidity, temperature, or use other function that we will detail in what follows.
The control panel is quite straightforward and easy to use. First of all, you can make use of a humidistat, which shows you the levels of humidity in the room, and allows you to select the desired level. Once you turn it on, it will start absorbing the moisture and soon bring humidity levels to those desired by you; depending on your needs or preferences, you can also choose between two speeds: the high speed absorbs 260 m3 of moisture per hour, whereas the low speed 220 per hour. While the high speed is more efficient, it can produce a bit more noise, so when you use it in a room you spend time in, the noise might become a bit bothersome.
As the name suggests, this Sunpentown model can remove up to 46 pints of moisture per day, even though its container is only 12.5 pints in capacity. The humidity settings you can select the range between 35 and 75 percent, so you can’t go wrong by removing all humidity and making the atmosphere too dry. A product that allows you to be this specific can be very important, and have many uses; for instance, you may have stored foods in the basement and need to keep them at a constant, fixed humidity; another idea is to use it for the greenhouse or winter garden, and keep a moderate humidity level for finicky plants. Other details you need to know are that the device can function at temperatures ranging between 41 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and that, more importantly, it can also be automatically drained by attaching a hose and fitting that to a drain pipe, or a simple floor drain. It does not come with such a hose and you would need to purchase one separately, but this feature can be very useful if you’re trying to maintain levels in rooms you visit rarely, such as basements, garages, workshops, buildings in construction, storage containers and so on.
An innovative feature is the UV light that kills bacteria from the air, thus increasing its health benefits. Moreover, there is also a TiO2 feature that involves releasing oxygen ions to improve air quality and limit the chances of developing impurities.

This item is efficient because it uses fan technology to absorb moisture and it even has features that purify the air; on one side it absorbs air to devoid it of moisture and pushes it out through a refrigerant on the other side. Moreover, it is fitted with an air ionizer, which is extremely efficient against dust, allergens, mold or mildew. It is energy efficient in that it shuts itself off when reaching the desired humidity level, and you can even use its timer to decide when it has to turn itself on and for how long to function.
There aren’t many safety risks to worry about when it comes to using it; it shuts itself off when reaching the selected humidity level, and starts functioning again if levels rise. Its special side light lets you know when to empty the container, but you can also use the drainage option if you like. While it is not very silent, it doesn’t produce much noise either, so it is ideal for its intended purpose. It comes with a one year warranty and is not too costly, depending on where you buy it from. Its controls are simple and make it easy to use, but remember that even though highly efficient, it will take some more time to clear humidity in areas larger than 200 square feet.
