Dehumidifiers come in a variety of sizes for different purposes. If you want something small and cheap, consider this Peltier dehumidifier from Gurin. Using advanced Peltier technology, it’s light, quiet, and incredibly easy to operate.

A Peltier or thermo-electric dehumidifier can work really well if used in the right type of space. This Gurin dehumidifier is no different. If you’re interested in this unit, you may want to look at the following features first to determine if this dehumidifier is right for you.

Gurin Electric Compact Dehumidifier

Moisture Removal Capacity

Thermo-electric dehumidifiers have a very limited moisture removal capacity, typically ranging from 8 oz to 30 oz per day (or around 0.5 to 2 pints). In comparison, a full-size desiccant dehumidifier has a rate of 10 to 20 pints per day, while a compressor-based dehumidifier can remove 20 to 50 pints of moisture per day.

The Gurin dehumidifier is one of the “small” Peltier dehumidifiers. It can remove up to 8 oz (240ml) of excess moisture and the water reservoir can hold 16 oz (480 ml). The optimal operating temperature for most thermoelectric dehumidifiers is from 59°F to 86°F. They will not work below 41°F. This is because when the air is too cold or too hot, the Peltier module may not be able to absorb moisture.

Area of Coverage

A thermo-electric dehumidifier is physically small and can only operate effectively in small spaces. Keep in mind that it’s not meant to replace a bigger and more expensive compressor or desiccant dehumidifier. The Peltier will make little to no impact on the humidity in a large room. Even the “large” units may not be enough for an average-sized bedroom.

This Gurin thermo electric dehumidifier is ideal for spaces within 1100 cubic feet or around 100 square feet. Most brands indicate the recommended coverage area in cubic feet instead of the square footage. This means you need to multiply the height, width, and length of the room. So, if your ceiling is 10 feet high, then the Gurin can only cover a 110 square feet room.

Noise Output

One of the best selling features of any Peltier dehumidifier is the whisper quiet operation. They can produce as low as 30 to 40 decibels while operating. The only part which makes noise is the fan, which is generally a pleasant white noise. On the other hand, compressors produce a loud buzzing noise and the fans on both the compressor and desiccant are much larger than the 12-volt fan used in a thermoelectric dehumidifier. Because of this, the latter is perfect for the bedroom or other small spaces you may need a quiet dehumidifier.

Dehumidifier Features

Build Quality

Peltier dehumidifiers are very small and light, another reason they are great for a small room like a bathroom, bedroom, office, or laundry room. They also make useful company if you need to control indoor humidity while travelling in an RV or boat.

Gurin is built just like any Peltier dehumidifier. This small dehumidifier is notably inexpensive since it’s made with inexpensive and often low quality components. However, replacement parts are easy to find in the rare case that any of them break. The only moving part is the small fan and it can easily be replaced with a generic 12-volt fan used for computers. Anyone with even the very basic knowledge in electronics is able to do this. With proper maintenance, your Gurin dehumidifier can last upwards of five years.

Ease of Use

A Peltier dehumidifier has a very basic design and almost anyone can use this dehumidifier with ease. Like most units, this Gurin dehumidifier is incredibly easy to operate with just one button for the power switch. One push and the unit will start dehumidifying, another push and it will stop. There is no control panel or digital display that you need to understand.

Unlike compressor types, this dehumidifier needs little to no maintenance. It has no removable parts except for the tank and the outlet filter on top. Both of which only need a simple wash, rinse, and dry every few weeks.

Like other dehumidifiers, Gurin features the standard automatic shut-off to prevent water overflow, as well as a “FULL” indicator light to notify you when you need to empty the tank. To drain, simply slide out the 16-oz water tank from the front of the unit, remove the plug, and pour the water into the sink or drain. Due to its size, you’ll only need to empty the water at least every two days.

Energy Efficiency

Power consumption and energy efficiency are a common concern for homeowners when buying a dehumidifier. Compared to the more common compressor type (which draws up to 700 Watts for a 50-pint unit), a thermo-electric dehumidifier consumes very little power—even as low as 20 Watts for the smallest models. Gurin, in particular, runs on 22.5 Watts, which means it consumes about 0.54kW after 24 hours of use. As long as you use it in the right space, you’ll feel a significant change in humidity and barely even notice it in your electricity bill.

How a Thermo-Electric Dehumidifier Works

Peltier dehumidifiers use a dehumidification technology based on the Peltier effect named after French physicist Jean Charles Athanase Peltier. In the 1800s, it was discovered that a voltage of electricity can be converted to a temperature difference. Thermoelectric dehumidifiers mainly consist of a Peltier module and two heat sinks on its two ends. One side of the module is hot while the other is cool.

The air travels through the entire Peltier module and the heat sinks on each of its sides. Humid air is drawn by a small fan on the cold side of the unit. As the damp air cools, the moisture condenses and drips down to the water tank. The cool and dry air then passes through the hot side heat sink. Then, warmer and dryer air exits through the exhaust.

Alternatives to Gurin Dehumidifier

Pro Breeze

One of the most popular brands of Peltier dehumidifiers is Pro Breeze. This compact small dehumidifier quietly pulls up to 18 ounces (500 ml) of excess moisture from the air with a water tank capacity of 52 ounces (1500 ml). It is perfect for any space up to 250 square feet. This smaller Pro Breeze unit has almost the exact same features as the Gurin dehumidifier. It even sells more despite the more expensive price.

Eva-Dry EDV-1100 RV Dehumidifier

Another popular brand of mini dehumidifiers is Eva-Dry. The EDV-1100 has a maximum moisture removal of 8 oz per day and a 16 oz water tank. Meanwhile, the Eva-Dry EDV-2200 can remove up to 20 ounces (600 ml) of moisture in small to mid-sized rooms while the tank can hold 2 liters. The model numbers indicate the coverage area. Note that these models cost about $20 more than similar sized units from other brands.

Ivation IVADM10

Ivation IVADM10 Thermo-Electric Dehumidifier

Another cheap alternative I’d recommend is this small unit from Ivation. It has a daily moisture removal rate of 8.5 oz (250 ml) and a water tank capacity of 17 oz (500 ml). Ivation also offers mid-size and large Peltier dehumidifiers with different features, as well as compressor-based and desiccant units in a variety of sizes.

Customer Feedback on Gurin Dehumidifier

Peltier dehumidifiers like Gurin are most common in small bedrooms and bathrooms. It can also be found in RVs and boats. Gurin has generally positive feedback in multiple online stores I checked. However, there are still negative comments due to the customer’s unrealistic expectations.

When making a purchase, it would be good to remember that this type of dehumidifier is specially designed for very small spaces with minimal moisture content. This is specified in the product description. Don’t expect this Gurin dehumidifier to work in a similar capacity as a full-size unit. If you’re only buying this to save on the initial cost, then I’m telling you now that you’ll be very disappointed in the end.

Know exactly what you need before you make any purchase. The size and humidity levels of the room are two of the most important factors you must consider when choosing a dehumidifier. Like most Peltier dehumidifiers, Gurin can be really effective if you use it in the right space.
