BLACK+DECKER Dehumidifier Reviews

BD50MWSA and BD50PMWSA

BLACKDECKER-BD50MWSA-Dehumidifier

BLACK+DECKER’s highest capacity dehumidifier removes up to 50 pints of moisture in 24 hours. BD50MWSA and BD50PMWSA are Energy Star certified with an impressive 1.9 integrated energy factor (IEF). Older versions of these models are the BDT50WTB and BDT50PWTB, respectively. The two newer models are essentially the same except for the built-in pump.

The 50-pint Black and Decker dehumidifier comes with all the standard features including digital controls and indicator lights, auto shutoff, auto defrost, and auto restart functions. It has automatic humidity control, a 24-hour timer, two fan speeds, and a pre-set Comfort mode. It is ideal for large rooms, basements, or even a small studio apartment up to 650 square feet.

While this dehumidifier is slightly smaller than the older model, the water collection tank has also become smaller, with a capacity of 12.68 pints (from the previous 14.3 pints). This is a lot smaller than the average 15 to 16 pints for 50-pint dehumidifiers. In extremely damp spaces, you may need to empty the tank four to five times in one day. If you don’t want to manually drain water, simply attach the included 1.64-foot drain hose and direct it down towards the drain for continuous draining. If there is no available floor drain in the area, you also have the built-in pump option.

The unit is designed with recessed handles and fours casters for easy movement. The manufacturer claims noise levels of 51 decibels, and according to user reviews, the unit is indeed on the quiet side. You can use this energy efficient dehumidifier in large spaces such as the basement and even the living room or kitchen.

Pros
• Energy Star certified with high IEF
• High moisture removal rate
• Continuous draining options
Cons
• Small water tank
• Included drain hose is too short

BD30MWSA

BLACK+DECKER BD30MWSA Dehumidifier

This BLACK+DECKER unit is one of the top choices for 30-pint dehumidifiers. The BD30MWSA model is the newer version of the BDT30WTB and is Energy Star rated with an IEF of 1.9, ensuring minimal energy consumption and more savings on your monthly bills.

Besides the moisture removal and tank capacities, all features and functionality are similar to the 50-pint units. It has the same electronic controls, digital display, and LED indicator lights. It’s ideal for smaller or less damp rooms up to 370 square feet, such as the living room, kitchen, or a small garage. Since the brand is known for quiet dehumidifiers, you can even use this unit in a master bedroom or an office.

While a lot of 30 or 35-pint models from other brands are the same size as their 50-pint counterparts, this 30-pint dehumidifier has a more compact build and a much smaller water tank. With a 6.4-pint capacity, it might be the smallest water tank in a 30-pint dehumidifier today. A lot of people may opt for continuous drainage, and BLACK+DECKER makes this easy with a drain hose provided. Although, it may be too short for some.

Pros
• Energy Star certified with high IEF
• Good for medium-sized damp spaces
• Continuous draining option
Cons
• Small water tank
• Included drain hose is too short

BD22MWSA

If the 30-pint is too much for you, BLACK+DECKER also offers a 22-pint dehumidifier. The BD22MWSA replaces the BDT22WTB model, the brand’s smallest and best-selling dehumidifier. Like the other, larger units, it is an Energy Star certified dehumidifier, with a 1.7 IEF rating. It’s recommended for spaces up to 280 square feet, such as a living room, bedroom, or any smaller area with moderate dampness.

This 22-pint dehumidifier has the same physical size as the 30-pint unit, down to the 6.4-pint water tank. This is on the small side even for a 22-pint unit. Since it has the same design and construction, you’ll also find the same features and functionality. Compared to other 20 to 22-pint dehumidifiers, this unit is not the most compact and portable.

Pros
• Energy Star certified with high IEF
• Good noise levels for bedroom
• Continuous draining option
Cons
• Not the most portable for its size
• Included drain hose is too short

Digital Controls

The BLACK+DECKER dehumidifier has almost any features you’ll find in most household dehumidifiers. One problem with these units is the lack of text labels on the control panel. It can take a while to get used to the control buttons and indicator lights, especially if it’s your first time using dehumidifiers.

BLACK+DECKER Dehumidifier Digital Control Panel

Humidistat

The small digital display on the right shows the current humidity in the room (from 35% to 85% RH with 5% accuracy) or the preferred humidity while setting. Press the arrow buttons to select the desired humidity level from 35% to 85% in 5% increments. The built-in humidistat will automatically turn off the unit when humidity is lower than your setting and start dehumidifying again when the room humidity rises. In case of a power outage, the auto restart feature will resume operation in your last selected settings once the power comes back.

Timer

This button is easy enough to understand. You can set your dehumidifier to turn on or turn off automatically from 0.5 to 10 hours in 0.5-hour increments, and up to 24 hours in one-hour increments. To program the unit to automatically turn on, press the Timer button when the unit is off. Select the number of hours using the arrow buttons and the Timer On indicator will light up. To program the unit to automatically turn off, press the button when the unit is on. The Timer Off indicator will light up when you finish setting the timer.

Turbo

Next to the Timer is the Turbo button which controls the fan speed. Press to select Turbo mode for maximum moisture removal, and the indicator light will illuminate. For quiet operation, press the button once again to go on Low fan speed, and the light will turn off.

Continuous Mode

Turn on Continuous mode to let the dehumidifier run its 24-hour cycle regardless of the current humidity level. The Continuous indicator light will illuminate when operating in this mode. This function will keep the unit operating without having to empty the bucket, so you’ll need to attach the drain hose to work in this mode.

Filter

The BLACK+DECKER dehumidifier has a washable and reusable filter to catch dust and other particles before the air enters the unit. After 250 hours of use, the Filter light will turn on to remind you it’s time to clean the filter. Remove the filter from the back of the unit and clean it with warm, soapy water. Let the filter dry completely before reinstalling, then press the Filter button to reset the filter indicator and the warning light will turn off.

Comfort

On the leftmost part of the control panel, you’ll find the button for Comfort mode. If you operate in this mode, the humidity cannot be adjusted manually. Instead, it will set the recommended humidity levels between 45% and 55% based on the ambient temperature. Although, like most household dehumidifiers, BLACK+DECKER doesn’t have a temperature display.

Drainage

Dehumidifiers collect moisture in a water bucket. When the bucket is full, the compressor and fan will stop running and the full bucket indicator will light up. Once the bucket is completely filled with water, you will need to empty it and replace it properly before the unit can start running again.

Remove the bucket by sliding it out from the bottom of the dehumidifier, then pour the water into the sink or drain, or save it for other use. Empty the bucket as soon as you can to prevent mold growth inside the machine. Rinse it before every refill and wash it at least every two weeks.

Drain Hose

In case you don’t have the time for manual emptying, this dehumidifier offers continuous draining via gravity. It comes with a 1.64 ft. (0.5 meter) drain hose and a drain cap. For mess-free drainage, make sure to place the dehumidifier higher than the drain and position the hose downward without any kinks or twists. If the hose is too short for you, you may use a standard garden hose. Remember that you need to attach a hose if you want to operate in continuous mode.

Drain Pump

If you don’t have a drain in the room you want to dehumidify, a condensate pump is the best solution. It automatically pushes the collected moisture out of the unit up to 15 feet vertically. You can position the hose upwards to a sink or out into a window or a hole. Most high-capacity dehumidifiers (40-pint or 50-pint and above) also come with a built-in condensate pump, like the 50-pint BD50PMWSA

Choosing the Correct Dehumidifier Size

Dehumidifier sizes are determined through tests performed under the Department of Energy standards. From 2012, dehumidifiers were tested at 80°F and 60% humidity. Starting June 2019, the DOE changed the conditions to 65°F and 60% humidity to reflect a more realistic representation of the dehumidifier’s performance in a basement setting.

BLACK+DECKER dehumidifiers come in three sizes: 22, 30, and 50 pints, each of which is recommended for a certain square footage area. When choosing a dehumidifier, consider the measurements of the room you want to dehumidify.

A 22-pint dehumidifier is ideal for small areas like bathrooms, or bedrooms if they’re quiet enough. Some models can even be used in boats and RVs. For small to medium-sized rooms with moderate dampness like the living or sleeping area, or even a small garage, a 30-pint dehumidifier may be the most ideal. Lastly, a 50-pint unit is perfect for more chilly and damp areas like the basement or garage.

To make sure you get the correct size, measure the square footage of your space and look for signs of moisture and dampness.

How Does BLACK+DECKER Compare to the Competition?

BLACK+DECKER (or Black and Decker) is a manufacturer of power tools and home appliances headquartered in Maryland. It was founded in 1910 as a machine shop in Baltimore and has developed over the century to provide solutions to home improvement needs, including dehumidifiers.

Build Quality and Warranty

When talking about build quality, Black and Decker dehumidifiers are among the top-rated together with brands like Frigidaire, hOmeLabs, and Honeywell. Since late 2021, the recent dehumidifier line features a similar design and construction to the hOmeLabs unit. They have almost the same control panel, except for the text labels.

Furthermore, BLACK+DECKER comes with an industry-standard one-year warranty. Most dehumidifiers, even Frigidaire, have a one-year warranty. Only hOmeLabs has two years, and Honeywell comes with a five-year warranty.

Dehumidification Performance

BLACK+DECKER dehumidifiers operate from 41°F to 89.6°F with an automatic defrost feature to prevent ice buildup. Just like most other brands, it comes in 22-pint, 30-pint, and 50-pint sizes, all of which are Energy Star certified. Unlike a few other models, this brand has an auto defrost light that will indicate when the unit is currently defrosting.

Noise Output

Noise depends on a lot of other factors, but you can expect compressor dehumidifiers to be loud when operating. Although, some models have a better way of masking the compressor noise with the more pleasing fan noise. The BLACK+DECKER unit has a top exhaust which makes for a pleasant sound at high fan speed since the fan noise is distributed evenly and masks the compressor noise well. The manufacturer claims minimum noise levels of 51 to 52 decibels, and a lot of users can attest to this. Because it is quieter than the average dehumidifier, you can also use it near living and sleeping spaces without worrying about the noise.

Conclusion

Overall, Black and Decker perform well in most conditions. This new line of dehumidifiers still has a limited number of reviews from multiple online stores, but based on the older models, they are both effective and quiet. While this brand is not the cheapest option in the market, the high energy efficiency will give you greater savings in the long run.

One big disadvantage to this dehumidifier line is the smaller water tanks despite the average-sized bodies. However, if you’d rather use the drain hose, then this may not matter to you at all. Lastly, if you’ll largely depend on the pump for drainage, then you may want to consider a more durable, external unit.

All this considered, BLACK+DECKER is a reliable, efficient dehumidifier if used and maintained properly. So make sure to get the correct size dehumidifier and follow instructions for setting up and maintenance to keep your unit functioning for long years to come.
