Dehumidifiers work by extracting excess moisture from the air. In high humidity areas, they can collect gallons of water per day. The total amount of water your dehumidifier collects in a day depends mainly on the size and condition of the room. In most cases, you have these three options for draining water from your dehumidifier:

Dehumidifier Tank

Residential dehumidifiers, by default, collect the moisture extracted from the air in an internal water reservoir. For standard compressor dehumidifiers, the capacity of this bucket is only a portion of the maximum moisture removal capacity of the unit. 

Depending on your settings and the dehumidifier capacity and tank size, manual draining may be the easiest option for you. You simply remove the tank and throw out the water or save it for later use. Many dehumidifiers feature an automatic shut-off that turns off the dehumidifier automatically when the water bucket is full, along with a “Full Bucket” indicator light to inform you when you need to empty the water. 

How to Drain Water Tank

Once the tank is full and the dehumidifier is shut off, the unit will only resume operation once you empty the water and replace the tank. Slide out the water tank from its place, usually on the bottom front or side of the unit. Remove the tank cover or lid and pour the water into the sink, drain, or collect it in a bigger bucket to water your plants later. Rinse the tank with water or wash it with liquid soap if necessary. Wipe it down and place it back into the dehumidifier.

The tank size of dehumidifiers varies greatly between different brands and models. Peltier dehumidifiers typically have a tank large enough to hold at least two days up to a week’s worth of moisture. However, refrigerant and desiccant dehumidifiers have a smaller tank size than moisture removal capacity, which means you may have to manually empty the tank multiple times a day. While it’s a fairly simple task, not everyone has the time to remove the bucket and manually drain the dehumidifier water three or four times a day, especially if you’re using the unit in your basement. In this case, you’ll need to set up one of the following automatic drainage systems.

Drain Hose

If you don’t want to have to remove and replace your dehumidifier’s tank to empty the water multiple times a day, the simplest way to drain the water is by using a drain hose. A few brands may include this in your purchase along with a drainage adapter, but usually, all you’ll need is a standard garden hose. 

How to Use Drain Hose

To enable gravity drainage, firstly, place the dehumidifier on a flat and steady surface with a low-level drain nearby. Locate the drain port, usually at the back or on the side of the unit. Unscrew the drain plug or cap and attach the adapter if needed, then insert the drain hose. Position the other end of the hose toward the drain, directed downwards without any kinks or knots to obstruct the water flow. Most people use a floor drain for this, but, you can also place the unit on top of a counter and direct the hose to the sink.

Condensate Pump

While a drain hose may be good enough for some, an even more convenient way to drain your dehumidifier is through a condensate pump. This pump is designed to forcefully remove the condensate from a reservoir, produced in heating or cooling, refrigeration, or dehumidification. It’s commonly used with a high-capacity dehumidifier or central air conditioner when gravity drainage isn’t possible.

With a condensate pump, you don’t need to worry about the placement of your dehumidifier with respect to the drain. You can pump the water upwards into a sink or out of a window. Most pumps can push water vertically or horizontally up to 15 to 20 feet. This drainage option is ideal for basements or other large spaces where a floor drain is not available.

Built-in Pump

Most high-capacity dehumidifiers (40-pint or 50-pint and above) have a built-in pump version. A built-in condensate pump only needs one hose for drainage (usually included with the unit but different from the gravity drain hose) since the pump is already installed inside the machine. Usually, the internal pump can push the water up to 15-feet high. 

External Pump

However, for those units that do not include an internal condensate pump, or if you’d rather use the alternative, you can purchase an external condensate pump separately. This pump works for many dehumidifiers as well as other HVAC equipment.

Can I Drain my Dehumidifier into a Sump Pump?

As you may do so with any machine that produces condensate, you can definitely drain your dehumidifier into a sump pump system. You can do this simply by connecting a hose from your dehumidifier drain outlet to your sump basin. 

A sump pump is essential for any home with a basement or crawl space that often suffers from water seepage, leaks, or floods. This submersible pump is installed inside a hole in the lowest point of the basement or crawl space where water accumulates. When the water inside this basin reaches a certain height, the pump will automatically drain water by pushing it out into an outdoor drainage system away from your house.

How to Drain Dehumidifier into Sump Pump

If you already have a sump pump system installed in your basement or crawl space, draining your dehumidifier into it is a very simple process. 

First, make sure to turn off and unplug your dehumidifier, then place it higher than the drain hose and sump pump basin if you’re using gravity drainage. Attach a garden hose (or the included drain hose) to the dehumidifier drain outlet and run it to the sump pump inlet. 

In case your dehumidifier comes with a built-in pump, you can still drain the water collected into your sump pump if there is no other drain available in the area. Simply connect the drain hose to the dehumidifier outlet and direct it to your sump pump. When the dehumidifier reservoir reaches a certain level, the pump activates and discharges water into your sump pump basin.

When your pump moves the water outdoors, make sure that the water is released onto the ground downhill and away from the house and never back into the basement or crawlspace, and certainly not into the street or driveway. Another option is to pump the water into an underground discharge line far from the house.

On the other hand, if you do not have a sump pump system installed in your basement or crawlspace, then you should start looking into your options.
