Review Of The Best Dehumidifiers For Bearded Dragon

Pro Breeze Thermoelectric Dehumidifier

Pro Breeze Mini Dehumidifier

Pro Breeze is known to use Peltier technology or thermoelectric cooling for low-energy and whisper-quiet dehumidification. This makes the unit ideal for a variety of purposes in small, enclosed spaces. What’s even better is the ease of setting up and using this type of dehumidifier. It features a single button at the back for the on and off function—no need to complicate your life with multiple buttons. It is also equipped with the standard auto shut-off feature that turns off the unit when the water tank is full, along with the corresponding “Full” indicator light. To empty the water, simply slide the tank out along the bottom of the unit, pull the drain plug, then pour the water out.

Pro Breeze dehumidifier runs on 72 Watts, consuming only about 0.86kW after 12 hours of continuous use. Its portable design allows you to place it on top of any table or shelf near your dragon tank, but make sure to provide enough space around the unit for proper air circulation. This type of dehumidifier works best between temperatures 56°F and 86°F. You’ll also need a separate hygrometer to monitor humidity levels when using this unit since it doesn’t have a built-in humidistat.

• Small, lightweight, and portable
• Low energy consumption
• Whisper-quiet operation
• Easy to use controls
• For small rooms only
• No humidistat

Seavon Thermoelectric Dehumidifier

SEAVON 35oz Dehumidifiers for Home, 2500 Cubic Feet

Another brand offering a wide range of mini Peltier dehumidifiers is Seavon. One of its “mid-sized” models is this unit that extracts up to 16 oz or 450ml of moisture per day and holds 35 oz or 1000ml. It is ideal for rooms within 2500 cubic feet or 260 square feet. It employs the same Peltier technology or thermoelectric cooling for low-energy consumption and whisper-quiet operation.

Unlike the typical mini dehumidifier like Pro Breeze, this Seavon dehumidifier gives you two options for the operation mode: high speed and low speed, running with 30 to 39 dB noise output. Another great function is the seven-color changing LED light. It features a cylindrical design with a tank on the bottom. On the top is the air exhaust as well as two buttons, one for the power and the other to change the fan speed and light. The light changes color by default, but you can also choose one color or turn it off completely. This dehumidifier is also equipped with the usual auto-shutoff feature and the red light will flash when you need to empty the tank.

Since this Peltier dehumidifier is on the larger side, you can find a handle on the back of the unit for portability. It also includes a removable, washable air filter behind the grille to catch dust and keep the air clean. The unit is guaranteed a two-year warranty. One downside is the lack of humidistat to adjust the humidity levels automatically.

• Small, lightweight, and portable
• Low energy consumption
• Whisper-quiet operation
• User-friendly controls
• With 7-color night light
• No humidistat

Eva-Dry E-333 Rechargeable Dehumidifier

Eva-dry E-333 Renewable dehumidifier

For smaller spaces with minimal moisture, you can turn to a wireless, renewable desiccant dehumidifier. The Eva-Dry E-333 uses silica gel technology to extract moisture from the air without the need for batteries or electricity. It is completely safe, non-toxic for your pets.

Silica gel works by adsorption (note: different from absorption) of moisture in the air which comes into contact. This is the same chemical you can usually find in packets inside food containers or shoe boxes. Through the Eva-Dry’s indicator window, you’ll see the silica gel turn from orange to green once it has reached the maximum capacity of 4 to 6 ounces of moisture usually within 20 to 30 days. To recharge, just plug in the unit for 8 to 12 hours until the beads are fully orange again. The unit can be renewed repeatedly for up to ten years, guaranteed by a five-year warranty.

The Eva-Dry E-333 can cover small areas up to 333 cubic feet. Note that this type of dehumidifier reduce humidity levels significantly in large spaces. The compact design is only meant to keep moisture out in tiny, enclosed spaces without actively using electricity. It is also available in twin packs and a larger E-500 unit. If you want a mess-free, tankless dehumidifier that can easily fit in a tiny space like a bearded dragon terrarium, then Eva-Dry is a good choice.

• Light and compact
• Wireless operation
• No batteries required
• Renewable and eco-friendly
• Five-year warranty
• Small absorption capacity
• The recharging process can take a while

Afloia Rechargeable Dehumidifier

Mini Dehumidifier, Afloia Gun Safe Dehumidifier Rechargeable Cordless Dehumidifiers with Heating Base

Just like Eva-Dry, this Afloia cordless dehumidifier operates without batteries or electricity. It also employs renewable silica gel technology to extract moisture from the air up to 4 oz or 100ml in spaces up to 54 square feet. The cylindrical design increases surface area of contact with moist air for more efficient moisture removal.

The silica gel beads change color from orange to green as you can see through the top window. Once it has reached maximum capacity, you need to recharge the dehumidifying unit. This Afloia dehumidifier is not like other rechargeable units that you need to plug directly. The dehumidifier stick itself is cordless while the PTC heating base is wired and plugged in when charging.

To renew the silica gel you need to place the dehumidifier cylinder on the heating base for about two hours. While recharging, the base blows warm air out through the vents and the indicator light will flash green. When recharging is done, the light will flash white and the dehumidifier will be on standby mode. Simply pick up the dehumidifier stick then place it where you need or back into the base to operate while plugged. Afloia comes with a one-year warranty.

• Light and compact
• Wireless operation
• No batteries required
• Fast recharging process
• Small capacity and coverage

Ivation 14.7-Pint Compressor Dehumidifier

Ivation 14.7-Pint Compressor Dehumidifier

Ivation is a brand that offers a wide selection of dehumidifiers, from mini Peltier units, full-size desiccant, to high-capacity compressor models. In the middle of this is the small 14.7-pint compressor dehumidifier. It appears almost similar to a large Peltier unit and Ivation’s own desiccant models, but it packs the power and efficiency of most any compressor dehumidifier. This small dehumidifier is recommended for spaces up to 320 square feet.

Although small, it does not fall short in functionality and automatic features. It includes an easy-to-understand LED display and four control buttons. Unlike the units above, it allows you to select the humidity level from 40% to 65% in 5% increments with the onboard humidistat, or choose Continuous mode to keep the unit running. Once you set the humidity level, the unit will automatically stop for 60 minutes when your specified relative humidity is achieved. It will then run the fan for five minutes to monitor humidity and resume lowering humidity when it rises by at least 5% RH.

You can also set a timer to automatically turn off the unit after one to 24 hours. The unit also stops automatically when the tank is full. It collects moisture in the tank with 3.8-pint capacity. If you don’t want to empty the tank manually, attach the included drain hose and direct it to a low-level drain to enable continuous drainage.

The dehumidifier also comes with a washable air filter you can easily pull out from the top of the unit. It has an extendable handle and four wheels for easy movement. In temperatures as low as 41F, the unit will go on Auto Defrost mode to prevent frost buildup. The upside is it draws less power compared to a similar sized desiccant unit. However, compared to other compressor dehumidifiers, it’s not the best quality and efficiency you can get for the price.

• High moisture removal rate
• Easy to use controls
• Low power consumption compared to a desiccant equivalent
• Continuous draining with hose included
• Not the best build quality

Frigidaire FFAD2233W1

Frigidaire Dehumidifier

The largest in our list is this Energy Star rated Frigidaire 22-pint dehumidifier from a home appliance brand known for high performance and excellent build quality. This dehumidifier is also available in a larger 35-pint, 50-pint, and 60-pint capacity.

Like any other standard residential dehumidifier, you can find the usual features on the control panel. Set your target humidity level from 35% to 85% and set a timer for auto off or on after 0.5 to 24 hours. While most brands only include two fan speeds, Frigidaire lets you choose from three: Low, Med, and High. This 22-pint unit has a side exhaust and a handle on each side unlike its larger capacity counterparts.

It has a relatively big 9-pint tank, of course with the standard auto shut-off feature and bucket full alert. Drain the water easily with the front-loading bucket with handle and splash guard. You may also connect a standard garden hose to the drain outlet for continuous drainage.

What’s great about the recent Frigidaire dehumidifiers is they work continuously even in low temperatures down to 41°F without defrosting the unit periodically, saving energy by avoiding standby mode. However, a potential downside is that Frigidaire comes with an industry-standard one-year warranty. It’s also a lot more expensive than any of the mini dehumidifiers on this list. Overall, if you want the best quality and performance, Frigidaire is never a wrong choice.

• Energy Star certified
• Quick and efficient moisture removal
• Works well in low temperatures
• High tank capacity
• Continuous drainage option
• Higher price
• Only 1-year warranty

Why Bearded Dragons Need Dehumidifiers

As mentioned, bearded dragons and its family of reptiles need proper humidity in their tanks. Too much or too little humidity can be harmful for bearded dragons. High humidity introduces to the environment different bacteria and fungi in levels that can be harmful to your pets. Add to that the wastes in the tank including fecal matter and leftover food, the levels of pathogens can rapidly increase.

Without the perfect humidity level inside the bearded dragon tank, there are higher chances of health problems such as bacterial infections and respiratory diseases. For this reason, it’s important to maintain humidity levels within the ideal range of 30% to 40% RH for your terrarium. One way to do this is by using a dehumidifier.

The main purpose of a dehumidifier is to reduce moisture levels in a high-humidity area. This is accomplished through different dehumidification methods, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. To maintain comfortable humidity in your reptile tank, you can choose from the different types of dehumidifiers depending on what you need. You can learn about them here.

Tips to Lower Humidity in a Bearded Dragon Tank

Humidity in a Bearded Dragon Tank
  1. The first thing you can do is to improve the airflow in the room and the tank itself. If the tank lacks airflow, the stagnant air is trapped inside and it creates an uncomfortable and humid environment for the bearded dragon. Adequate airflow promotes evaporation that reduces moisture in the air.

To increase the airflow inside the tank, add an air screen or a metal lid on top of the tank with small openings or mesh wire to let the air enter the tank. Make sure that there is also enough airflow in the room where you have the tank. Open a window if the air outside is cool enough but not freezing. You can also use a fan to circulate the air, or for larger rooms, you can turn on the air conditioning to have better control of the temperature in the room, and the relative humidity along with it.

  1. Monitor the relative humidity in the room using a hygrometer or similar device. Find a good placement for the tank, but don’t put it by the window. When the air is too cold, it will lower the temperature as well as the relative humidity in the tank. On the other hand, direct sunlight will increase the temperature and possibly the relative humidity in the tank. If the room is simply too humid, it may be best to find a different location for the bearded dragon tank where you can maintain proper humidity levels. Basements and garages, for example, are typically too cold and damp.
  1. Remove sources of excess moisture from the tank. If you have a water dish in the tank, it can increase humidity levels. If you need to leave drinking water for your pet, place it on the cooler side to avoid excess humidity.
  1. You can also try some DIY alternatives to help reduce moisture content inside the tank. For instance, rice is known to be a good absorbent of moisture. To reduce moisture, fill a sock with rice and simply place it on the colder side of the tank. However, note that this will only help reduce humidity by a small degree and it’s not an alternative to an actual dehumidifier.
  1. Remove any live plants inside the tank. They can raise humidity inside since you need to water them and they also produce water that evaporates into the air. If possible, remove them altogether and replace them with artificial plants.

Bearded dragons, just like most household pets, require your proper care and attention to live healthily and comfortably. One important aspect that can greatly impact their comfort is the humidity inside their tanks. It is critical to their health to maintain optimal humidity levels between 30% and 40% RH. Otherwise, high humidity allows harmful bacteria and fungi to propagate and possibly cause diseases. To help maintain proper humidity, you need a good dehumidifier for bearded dragon tank.

When choosing an electric mini dehumidifier for reptiles, you must first understand the different types and sizes available. Each has a different purpose and is recommended for a certain range of coverage areas and humidity levels. Make sure to find the right type and size of dehumidifier to maximize its performance. We have listed two units from each of the three types of dehumidifiers we discussed. You can also follow the simple tips above to help reduce humidity in the tank as well as the room it’s located to minimize the work for your dehumidifier.
