Top 6 Best RV Dehumidifiers Review

Pro Breeze Mid-Size Dehumidifier

Pro Breeze Dehumidifiers for Home, 225 sq ft Mini Dehumidifier

If you need a small and compact dehumidifier you can easily place on top of a table or counter in your camping trailer, RV, or any remote place with limited ower supply, then you need a Peltier unit. And when talking about Peltier dehumidifiers, we can’t forget about the Pro Breeze electric mini dehumidifier. This unit is perfect for any small space up to 250 square feet. This compact dehumidifier extracts up to 18 ounces (500 ml) of excess moisture per day and holds 52 ounces (1500 ml) in its tank. This means you only have to empty it at least every two days.

It is easy to operate with a simple one-button control for the power switch found on the top. It is also equipped with the auto shut-off feature for when the water tank is almost full, along with an LED indicator light that alerts you when this happens. It is incredibly easy to use and maintain. When the water tank is full, simply slide it out from the bottom part of the unit, pull the drain plug, and empty the content into your sink, drain, or a bucket for later use.

On the downside, this unit is not built for heavy use in highly humid rooms.  Most Peltier dehumidifiers are designed to work under average conditions. They usually work best at temperatures between 59℉ and 86℉. In any case, for small spaces with minimal moisture, Pro Breeze is one of the best mini dehumidifiers you can find. You’ll also want to check out this smaller Pro Breeze unit.

Eva-Dry EDV-1100

Eva-dry Edv-1100 Electric Petite Dehumidifier

Also popular for manufacturing mini dehumidifiers of different types is the Eva-Dry brand. For even smaller rooms, campers or boats, consider the cheaper and more compact EDV-1100. It is Eva-Dry’s smallest Peltier dehumidifier and runs on a standard 110V AC or a 12V DC like the other units. This small but powerful dehumidifier has a daily moisture removal capacity of 8 ounces or 220 ml and tank capacity of 16 ounces or 450 ml or at least two days worth of dehumidification.

This Eva-Dry unit has the standard auto shut-off function to prevent any spills and an LED indicator light when the water tank is full. To empty the tank, slide it out from the dehumidifier, remove the cover, then drain the water. It is also extremely easy to operate with just a single button to turn the unit on or off.

Like most any mini dehumidifier, Eva-Dry uses the whisper-quiet Peltier effect or thermoelectric cooling technology, makes it a perfect choice for most small spaces up to 1,100 cubic feet. It is incredibly cost-efficient from purchase to operation. Running only on 22 Watts, you can leave it running all day on hot summer days out. However, optimal operating temperatures range from 59°F to 86°F, so you should manage your expectations when using the dehumidifier in more extreme environments.

Seavon Mini Dehumidifier

Seavon Mini Dehumidifier

Yet another popular brand of mini dehumidifiers we recommend is Seavon. Its smallest and cheapest offering is this unit with a maximum daily capacity of 11.8 ounces or 400 ml and a tank capacity of 16 ounces or 500 ml. It can cover tiny spaces up to 2200 cubic feet or 225 square feet, making it ideal for bathrooms, bedrooms, or a standard size RV and boat cabin.

This Seavon small dehumidifier also includes the standard auto shut-off feature to prevent water overflow, and a corresponding indicator light to alert you when the tank is full. This unit features the same one-button control for optimal ease of use and covenience.

To drain the water, simply slide out the water tank from the front of the unit, pull the drain plug, and pour out the water. It runs on 23W, consuming about 0.55kW after 24 hours of use. You can also plug it into a standard 12V adapter if a 110V outlet is not available.

Gocheer Mini Dehumidifier

Gocheer Mini Dehumidifier

For those who need a more powerful dehumidifier for a large RV or camper or even a small rental cottage or cabin, then this unit may be what you need. The Gocheer portable dehumidifier is suitable for spaces up to 480 square feet. This unit can remove up to one liter (33 ounces) of moisture per day while the tank can hold two liters (64 ounces).

Gocheer features the standard automatic shut-off to prevent water overflow, as well as a full tank indicator light when you need to empty the tank. Despite being a larger unit, this Peltier dehumidifier has essentially the same functions as the smaller models above. It features just one button at the back for the power switch. There is a water level window on the front and the tank can be accessed from the back of the unit. When the tank is full, simply pull it out, open the lid, and empty the water.

When operating, the unit produces less than 40 decibels of noise. Being light, portable, and quiet, you can use this small dehumidifier anywhere you need. A few users have noted that it is more suitable for 12V DC outlets. It draws 48 Watts or a total of 1.15kW after 24 hours of running. However, compared to similarly priced Peltier units, Gocheer could use some upgrades to its design.

Seavon Portable Dehumidifier

Seavon Portable Dehumidifier

Our second entry from Seavon is one of its mid-sized models with a daily moisture removal capacity of 16 ounces (450ml) and a tank capacity of 35 ounces (1000ml). It covers any space within 2500 cubic feet or 260 square feet, including bedrooms, bathrooms, and camping trailers.

Unlike most other Peltier units, this Seavon dehumidifier has two operation modes: high speed and low speed, operating with low noise levels from 30 to 39 decibels. It also features a seven-color LED light. The light changes color by default, but you can also choose one color or turn it off completely. The unit features a cylindrical design with the exhaust on top along with two buttons, one for the power control and the other to change the fan speed and light. It also comes with the standard automatic shut-off while the red light flashes when the tank is full.

Since this unit is on the bigger side, it features a recessed handle on the back for added mobility. Another extra feature is the removable and washable air filter on the back of the unit to clean the air from dust and other impurities.

Ivation IVADM45

Ivation IVADM45 Powerful Mid-Size Thermo-Electric Intelligent Dehumidifier

The largest and most advanced on our list of 12V dehumidifiers is the Ivation IVADM45. The brand is also known for its wide selection of dehumidifiers of different types and sizes. This unit uses the same Peltier technology but with a higher dehumidification capacity of 25 ounces (730 ml) per day and a bigger tank that can hold up to 68 ounces (2000 ml) of water.

Among its many features, the best thing about this unit is the built-in adjustable humidistat. A typical Peltier dehumidifier continuously runs until you turn it off manually or its tank is full, wasting energy and creating inconsistent humidity in your space. The IVADM45, on the other hand, allows you to set your desired humidity level from 40% to 80% in 5% increments. The dehumidifier will stop when current humidity is 5% below your setting and resume when humidity rises 5% above your setting.

While most Peltier dehumidifiers only include a single button for the power switch, this unit has additional buttons for humidity control. You can find the power button on the back along with the unit’s air inlet and water tank. It features the standard auto shut-off and a full tank indicator light that prevents overflow when the tank is full.

It’s ideal for small spaces up to 100 square feet. It may be a good option for those who want to save on the cost of regular compressor dehumidifiers. However, note that it’s still not as effective and efficient in standard rooms only a regular dehumidifier can handle. It also works best at temperatures from 59°F and 86°F and not in extreme environments. Running on 60 Watts of power, this dehumidifier only consumes around 0.72kW after 12 hours of use.

What is a 12V Dehumidifier and How Does it Work?

There are two main types of dehumidifiers based on the dehumidifying process they use: refrigerant and desiccant. However, there is one other type of dehumidifier commonly used in small spaces, especially in areas where a standard 110V outlet is not available. This includes RVs, camping trailers, and even boats. We call these units Peltier or thermoelectric dehumidifiers. These dehumidifiers require very low power, often below 50W. They can run on a 12V cigarette lighter power outlet, making them the perfect portable dehumidifiers.

The Peltier effect used in thermoelectric dehumidifiers was named after French physicist Jean Charles Athanase Peltier. It is based on the idea that a voltage of electricity creates a temperature difference between two sides of a Peltier module. A thermoelectric dehumidifier mainly consists of a Peltier element, a heat sink on each of its sides, a small fan to facilitate airflow, and a water tank on the bottom half of the unit.

The fan draws moist air in through the cold side of the Peltier. As the air cools down, it loses hold of the water vapor and moisture drips down to the tank. Now the fan sends the cool and dry air through the hot side heat sink. Warmer and dryer air then exits through this side.

This process is almost similar to that of a refrigerant-based dehumidifier but on a much smaller scale. Instead of using a heavy and bulky compressor and metal coils, a Peltier dehumidifier simply needs the Peltier element and a small fan. However, as is the case with the larger compressor dehumidifier, its effectiveness also decreases in lower temperatures.

Maintenance for 12V Dehumidifiers

A Peltier dehumidifier requires little to no maintenance since it has no moving parts except for the fan. The most you’ll have to do is replace this part with a standard 12-volt fan in the rare case that it breaks or malfunctions. It is relatively easy to find and simple to install with only some basic knowledge of electronics.

You do need to empty the tank of the dehumidifier as soon as possible. Typically, it has the capacity to hold at least two days’ worth of moisture, so you can leave the unit running for days without having to empty the tank. Nevertheless, you must make it a habit to empty the water collected at least every two days and wash the tank with soap. This prevents mold and bacteria from growing inside the tank and ensures the unit’s efficiency.

Where to Use a 12V Dehumidifier

These mini dehumidifiers require little power and can be used to control humidity in small areas with a limited power supply. It is a must-have in boats and camping trailers where moisture buildup can cause a lot of damage to structure and furniture. A 12-volt dehumidifier can help keep excess moisture and odors out even in off-grid spaces.

Furthermore, it is perfectly capable to handle small rooms in a regular house that is prone to high humidity. Bathrooms and laundry rooms are particularly vulnerable to excess humidity and eventually, mold growth. With a mini Peltier dehumidifier, you can prevent moisture before it creeps into other areas of your home.

Since the fan is the only moving part in this type of dehumidifier, it produces little noise during operation. Averaging 30 to 40 decibels noise levels, this dehumidifier can be used even in bedrooms where you need to control humidity and reduce the risk of allergies.

Features to Consider When Buying a Dehumidifier

The best-rated RV dehumidifier units like the ones we listed above are usually inexpensive and easy to use and maintain. However, you cannot simply buy any which one and hope it works as you desire. The difference per unit may be small but it can still affect the unit’s overall performance and user experience. Consider the following factors when choosing a dehumidifier and compare them with your specific needs.

Dehumidification performance

This is the total amount of moisture the dehumidifier can remove from the air in 24 hours in average conditions. On the grand scale, a few ounces of difference in capacity may hardly matter, but it still helps to know its full capabilities so you can manage your expectations. The smallest models have a capacity of 6 to 10 ounces per day, while mid-sized models have around 11 to 18 oz capacity and the largest have at least 20 oz per day.

Tank capacity

Dehumidifiers hold the moisture collected in a tank found on the bottom half of the unit. Unlike the large compressor dehumidifiers that can be drained through a hose, Peltier dehumidifier tanks must be emptied manually. Although, compared to compressor units whose tank needs to be drained multiple times a day, the Peltier has a tank capacity larger or even twice its daily capacity. This means you only need to empty the water every two days or up to a week. Furthermore, the tank is easy to remove, drain, and reinstall in its place.

Coverage area

The dehumidifier capacity usually directly relates to the unit’s coverage area. Standard Peltier dehumidifiers can cover around 100 to 200 square feet, while the performance declines the larger the area. Manufacturers indicate the recommended area of coverage for each unit, sometimes in cubic feet instead of the more common square footage. Measure the length, width, and height of the space to make sure your dehumidifier is suitable for it.

Extra features

Peltier dehumidifiers have a very basic design, usually with just a single button for the power switch. This is good for your convenience, but it also limits your option and may waste energy. A few of the larger units give you more control over the fan speed and noise level, and even the humidity level in the case of the IVADM45 unit. Some may also come with a dust filter.

FAQ

Are 12-volt dehumidifiers effective?

Yes. Any type of dehumidifier can work extremely well if used in the right space. Keep in mind that these smaller units have a limited capacity and coverage. A good RV dehumidifier should be able to keep humidity levels within the ideal range inside small enclosed spaces.

What is the average noise level of Peltier dehumidifiers?

These units are usually very quiet with noise levels around 30 to 40 decibels. For reference, this is similar to whisper sounds. On the other hand, compressor units make 40 to 60 decibels or louder, similar to normal conversation noise.

Where can I use a 12-volt dehumidifier?

You can use a mini dehumidifier in small spaces with limited power supply including RVs, campers, and boats. You may also plug an RV dehumidifier into standard 110V outlets to dehumidify small rooms in your home.

Conclusion

Excess moisture creates an environment ideal for mold and mildew, making your home uncomfortable and sometimes even dangerous to your health. Along with mold, other indoor allergens thrive in high humidity environments. With a proper dehumidifier, you can reduce humidity levels and help prevent allergies, asthma attacks, and other respiratory issues caused by excess humidity.

If your main concern is the dehumidifier’s power consumption, you have many options for energy-efficient units that can run even on a 12-volt lighter. These are light and portable units you can take anywhere you go, but always take note of their capacity and coverage so as not to get disappointed.
