Arctic King Dehumidifier Review

This is a review of the current Arctic King dehumidifier units.

Arctic King appliances are manufactured under the Chinese-based brand Midea. They are especially known for portable dehumidifiers and air conditioners at a good value for the price. These dehumidifiers are available in the standard sizes of 20 pints, 35 pints, and 50 pints, with the usual features and functionality.

The Arctic King dehumidifier features almost everything you may find in a modern dehumidifier, but like any other brand, it’s not without its faults. If you’re looking for a dehumidifier and considering Arctic King, we’ll discuss each of its features below. You will also find some potential advantages and disadvantages if you choose to buy an Arctic King dehumidifier. In the table below we’ve listed the important specifications of each Arctic King unit currently available.

50-pint Dehumidifier

Arctic King Dehumidifiers

Arctic King’s high-capacity dehumidifier removes up to 50 pints of moisture in large damp spaces such as basements, garages, and even an entire apartment. It is Energy Star certified to ensure maximum efficiency and higher savings.

This Arctic King 50-pint Energy Star dehumidifier features the standard dehumidifier control panel with a digital humidistat and a 24-hour timer, along with the respective LED indicator lights for the selected operation mode, Turbo fan speed, Auto Defrost, Full Tank, and Filter. It also features the standard auto shut-off, auto restart, and auto defrost functions for your safety and convenience.

The 50-pint Arctic King unit comes with a 1.6-gallon water tank. If you don’t want to manually drain the water, it offers a continuous draining option via gravity. Attach a garden hose (not included) to the drain outlet and direct the other end of the hose to a sink, drain, or bucket below the unit. This 50-pint dehumidifier also has a version with a built-in pump, the Arctic King WDP50E1N-P model. It’s similar to the standard version just with the additional condensate pump. The dehumidifier’s basic design comes with a handle for both sides and 4 wheels for portability. It has the air inlet and washable filter on the back and the exhaust on the side.

35-pint and 20-pint Dehumidifiers

35-pint and 20-pint Dehumidifiers

If you don’t need a high-capacity dehumidifier, Arctic King also offers smaller dehumidifiers with 35-pint and 20-pint sizes for less humid spaces. The design itself is different from the bigger dehumidifier model but all other features remain the same as the 50-pint unit beside the dehumidifying capacity and power usage. The air inlet is on the front while the exhaust is on the side. Both the 20-pint and 35-pint units are also Energy Star rated so you can save energy and money on your bills.

These smaller capacity dehumidifiers feature the older design with a lower quality digital display. Nevertheless, it includes most of the same functions such as the adjustable humidistat and timer, Continuous mode, and Turbo fan speed. There is currently no information we could find regarding the tank capacity of these units but they also offer continuous drainage through a drain hose not included with the unit.

For humid areas in the home such as basements and laundry rooms, it’s recommended to purchase the next bigger capacity suitable for the size of your space to maximize its performance and coverage.

Pros
• Energy Star certified
• Easy-to-use electronic controls
• Continuous draining options

Design and Usability

Digital Controls

Arctic King Dehumidifiers Digital Controls

Control panel on the 20-pint and 35-pint dehumidifiers

Control panel on the 20-pint and 35-pint dehumidifiers

Control panel on the 50-pint dehumidifier

Arctic King dehumidifiers feature a standard top control panel with a small digital humidity display, control buttons, and LED indicator lights with text labels.

Digital Humidistat

Although different in layout, the controls on all Arctic King models have the same features. It includes a built-in adjustable humidistat where you can set the humidity level from 35-85% RH and the unit maintains your setting. The two-digit display shows the current humidity from 30-90%. When the unit senses humidity below your setting, it will stop dehumidifying. When it senses humidity 5% above your setting, it will resume operation.

Timer

Like most standard dehumidifiers today, the dehumidifier allows you to set a timer to automatically start or stop operation after 30 minutes to 24 hours. Push the Timer button when the unit is off then select the time. The ON indicator light above the TIMER will illuminate. Set the timer in your desired increments of time, usually displayed by half-hour increments.

Turbo Mode

Arctic King dehumidifiers feature two fan speeds. The button for Turbo sets the unit to operate at high fan speed. You can still manually set the humidity level when you select this fan speed.

Continuous Mode

The button for Continuous mode enables nonstop operation at automatically programmed setting for 24 hours or until the water bucket is full. The “CONT” indicator light will illuminate when running on continuous operation.

Comfort Mode

The smaller Arctic King dehumidifiers also include a Comfort mode similar to other higher-rated brands like hOmeLabs and Vremi. Press the mode button until the Comfort indicator light illuminates. In this mode, the humidity cannot be adjusted manually but it will be set to the recommended humidity levels based on the ambient temperature.

Filter

Arctic King has a removable air filter for dust in the air as it enters the unit. After a certain period, the Filter light will illuminate to remind you to check and clean your filter. Remove the filter from behind the air intake grilles (either on the front or back of the dehumidifier), wash the filter with clean water then allow it to dry completely before putting it back in place. Press the Filter button in order to reset the indicator light.

Drainage Options

Arctic King dehumidifiers collect moisture in their water tank by default. It has a transparent window so you can check the water level, as well as the necessary auto shut-off feature and full tank alert to tell you when the tank reaches maximum capacity. While Arctic King water tanks are on the smaller side, this makes them lighter and easier to remove. However, if the room is extremely humid, you may need to empty the water by hand t least a few times a day. If this is too inconvenient for you, you can simply utilize the continuous draining option.

Like most dehumidifier brands, Arctic King gives you an option for gravity draining through a garden hose (not included). Attach the hose to the drain outlet at the back of the unit and make sure to place the dehumidifier higher than the drain. Remove any kinks or knots and other obstacles to the hose and ensure that the other end is directed straight towards a suitable drain below the unit to allow the water to flow down smoothly. Remember to detach the hose and replace the tank if using manual draining instead.

Arctic King condensate pump

Most dehumidifier brands also include a built-in condensate pump with high-capacity units 50-pint and higher. The same is true for Arctic King. The internal pump automatically pushes the water out at a farther distance and up to a certain height above the unit. This is so you can place the hose up into a sink or out of a window or other suitable locations in case you don’t have a floor drain in the area you need to dehumidify. However, in most cases, built-in pumps typically give up to natural wear and tear before the unit itself so you may be better off with a more durable external pump if you want to use this function.

Dehumidification Performance

Dehumidification Performance

Dehumidifier Capacity

Dehumidifier performance ratings and testing standards are determined by the Department of Energy. As of early 2020, portable dehumidifiers are tested at 65°F and 60% humidity. This is 15° lower than the 2012 standards of 80°F and 60% humidity, designed to give a more accurate representation of the unit’s actual performance in a cold and wet basement. Following the new dehumidifier sizing standards, Arctic King dehumidifiers are now available in sizes 20-pint, 35-pint, and 50-pint.

Typically, a higher capacity is recommended for a larger coverage area, but there are no exact values we could find for Arctic King dehumidifiers. For lightly damp spaces between 500 to 1,000 square feet, a 20- to 22-pint dehumidifier is usually recommended. For moderate to extremely damp rooms larger than 1,000 square feet, start with the 35-pint up to the 50-pint unit. You can find a more detailed guide on dehumidifier sizing on the Energy Star website.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is also an important factor in determining the dehumidifier’s performance. DOE also measures the average amount of energy the dehumidifier consumes when operating and when on standby. This is measured by the integrated energy factor (IEF) of the dehumidifier and the higher the unit’s efficiency, the higher your potential savings. Look for the Energy Star label on your dehumidifier to make sure it meets the strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency and is certified to be energy efficient. All current Arctic King dehumidifiers have an Energy Star rating.

How Arctic King Compares to Similar Dehumidifier Brands

Arctic King dehumidifiers Model

Build Quality and Warranty

The build quality and design of the dehumidifier both impact its performance and reliability as well as your experience. In terms of the build quality, Arctic King dehumidifiers are about average or below popular dehumidifiers like Frigidaire, hOmeLabs, and Honeywell. In fact, the newer Arctic King 50-pint has a similar design as hOmeLabs and Vremi dehumidifiers, with the same control panel features, a side exhaust, and a recessed handle on each side. The older design on smaller models is more similar to that of Keystone, which is also of lower price and build quality compared to higher rated brands.

Additionally, Arctic King comes with a one-year warranty. This doesn’t say a lot about its quality and reliability though, since this is a standard in the dehumidifier industry. Even top-rated brands like Frigidaire only come with a one-year warranty.

Dehumidification Performance and Efficiency

Similar to other brands, Arctic King offers 20-pint, 35-pint, and 50-pint dehumidifiers, all of which are Energy Star rated as well. They operate in low temperatures down to 41℉ with the standard automatic defrost control to melt the ice and prevent frost buildup that can damage the metal coils. Unlike a few other brands, Arctic King dehumidifiers have an indicator light on the panel to let you know when the unit is currently defrosting.

Noise Output

You can expect any compressor dehumidifier to be loud when operating, although some models have a better way of masking the noise with more pleasing fan noise. Units with a top exhaust distribute the fan sound more evenly to make a more pleasant sound. Arctic King dehumidifiers are as loud as you can expect considering they have a side exhaust. The noise can vary greatly per unit and depending on the capacity and fan speed selected.

Conclusion

Overall, Arctic King dehumidifiers, like the main brand Mideam perform similarly to any standard residential dehumidifier. Just like the higher-rated brands like hOmeLabs and Vremi, it features most of the same functions as well as a similar product design. However, it still has only a few hundred reviews for each dehumidifier model across different online stores. It is essential to consider actual customer reviews to be able to know how reliable the dehumidifier will be after a few years of regular use. As of this writing, Arctic King dehumidifiers are about as well-received as the standard Midea dehumidifiers. If you just want a simple and affordable portable dehumidifier readily available in stores, Arctic King can be a good option for you.
